“Being fully present to fear, to gratitude, to all that is—this is the practice of mutual belonging. As living members of the living body of Earth, we are grounded in that kind of belonging. Even when faced with cataclysmic changes, nothing can ever separate us from Earth. We are already home.”
- Joanna Macy
Joanna Rogers Macy (May 2, 1929 – July 19, 2025) was an environmental activist, author, and scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology. She authored twelve profound books.
Her Work That Reconnects, uplifts us to face ecological and social crises with courage, compassion, and a sense of interconnectedness - something we need now more than ever. She had the ability to articulate complex issues, and a capacity to inspire hope and action. A few highlights:
Impactful Framework:
The Work That Reconnects is a key aspect of Joanna’s prodigious legacy, offering a framework for personal and social transformation in the face both the polycrisis and metacrisis.
Unique Perspective:
Her work blends insights from Buddhism, general systems theory, deep ecology, and her own lived (and courageous!) experiences, offering a unique and integral approach to social and environmental issues.
Focus on Interconnectedness:
Joanna’s work emphasized the interconnectedness of all beings and the importance of acknowledging and honoring our pain for the world.
I had the privilege of meeting Joanna a little over 30 years ago, when she was my professor in graduate school. We went on to be become friends and colleagues, teaching over a half dozen programs together. It’s my honor to convene and officiate this celebration for a woman who has been a profound influence on my life and those of countless others. Please join in celebrating and honoring this remarkable human’s legacy.
Warmly,
Jonathan Gustin
